๐Ÿ›๏ธ Home tech we'd recommend

๐Ÿ’ก We don't list prices or ratings here because they change daily. Check the current price and reviews on the official site or your favorite store before you buy. Brand names are examples of well-known options, not paid placements.

Password managers

One strong master password (or passkey) unlocks a vault that creates and fills unique passwords everywhere.

What to look for

  • Works on all your devices: phone, computer and browser
  • Supports passkeys and lets you turn on 2FA for the vault itself
  • Family sharing if you manage passwords for parents or kids
  • A free version to try first; the built-in ones from Apple and Google are free

Mesh Wi-Fi systems

If your Wi-Fi drops in the far bedroom or backyard, two or three mesh units spread around the house fix it better than a lone extender.

What to look for

  • Wi-Fi 6 or newer (6E or 7) for today's phones and laptops
  • Enough units for your home's size and layout (the box usually lists square footage)
  • A simple phone app and automatic security updates
  • Guest network support for visitors and smart gadgets

Backup drives & cloud storage

Photos and documents are irreplaceable. A drive at home plus a cloud copy covers you against spills, theft and ransomware.

What to look for

  • At least twice the space of what you're backing up
  • Works with the free built-in backup tools (Time Machine on Mac, File History or Windows Backup on PC)
  • An SSD if you want small, fast and drop-resistant
  • For cloud: automatic photo backup and a plan size that fits your library

Security cameras & video doorbells

See who's at the door or check on the house from your phone.

What to look for

  • Two-factor sign-in on the camera account (a must)
  • End-to-end encryption or local storage options for your video
  • What's free vs. what needs a monthly plan (video history often costs extra)
  • Privacy zones so you're not recording the neighbors

Kid-friendly tablets & parental controls

Give kids a device with guardrails, and approve what they download and buy.

What to look for

  • Built-in parental controls: time limits, content filters and โ€œask to buyโ€
  • A sturdy kid case (kid editions often include one)
  • Free tools first: Apple Screen Time and Google Family Link cost nothing
  • Sit down together to set the rules; it works better than secret monitoring

Smart plugs

The easiest first step into a smart home: put a lamp or holiday lights on a schedule or control them by voice.

What to look for

  • Matter support, so it works with Apple, Google, Amazon and Samsung systems
  • Works with the voice assistant you already have
  • Most need 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; check your router supports it (nearly all do)
  • Energy monitoring if you're curious what things cost to run

  • Supports passkeys (FIDO2)
  • Buy two: one to use, one as a spare in a safe place
