Video doorbells and home cameras: what to know first

How they work, who can see the video, and the security settings that matter.

The short version

A video doorbell or Wi-Fi camera sends video to your phone, usually through the maker’s cloud. That makes your account password the key to your home video, so use a strong one with two-step sign-in, and check whether you need a paid plan to save clips.

📅 Checked as of October 2026. Plans and features vary by brand, so we don’t list prices. Apps and rules change, so check the sources below if something looks different.

How they work

  • The camera connects to your Wi-Fi and alerts your phone when it sees motion or someone rings.
  • Live view is usually free. Saving and replaying clips often needs a subscription, unless the camera saves to a memory card or a base station at home (“local storage”).
  • Some brands offer end-to-end encryption, so only your phones can view the video. It’s often off by default.
Think of it like this: a cloud camera is like a security guard who mails tapes to an office across town. Handy, but you want to know who holds the keys to that office.

A real-world lesson

In 2023 the FTC said Ring had let employees and contractors access customers’ private videos and failed to stop hackers from taking over cameras. Ring agreed to a settlement and stronger security rules. Lesson: pick brands with good security, and protect your own account.

Set-up checklist

  • Use a unique password and turn on two-step sign-in in the camera app. See how.
  • Turn on end-to-end encryption if your brand offers it.
  • Check shared users in the app and remove anyone who shouldn’t have access.
  • Keep the camera’s firmware updated (most do this automatically).
  • Point cameras at your property, not into neighbors’ windows or yards, and check local rules about recording audio.
  • Avoid indoor cameras in bedrooms and bathrooms, and know when they’re recording.

Works with other gear?

Most cameras work through their own app, plus Alexa or Google displays. The newer Matter standard added camera support in 2025, but few cameras use it yet.

Quick tips

  • Turn on two-step sign-in for your camera account today.
  • Check who has shared access in the app.
  • Decide: local storage, or a cloud plan? Know before you buy.
