Smart home basics: plugs, speakers and hubs

What smart plugs, speakers and hubs do, and how to start small and safely.

The short version

A smart home is just ordinary things (lights, plugs, thermostats, doorbells) that you can control from your phone, by voice or on a schedule. Most connect to your Wi-Fi or to a small hub, and they’re managed with an app.

The main pieces

  • Smart plug: plugs into the wall; you plug a lamp or fan into it and switch it on or off from your phone or on a timer. The easiest, cheapest place to start.
  • Smart speaker or display: a speaker with a voice assistant like Alexa, Google Assistant or Siri. It plays music, sets timers and can control other gadgets by voice.
  • Hub: a small box (sometimes built into a speaker or router) that lets gadgets using different wireless types talk to each other. Many simple setups don’t need a separate one.
Think of it like this: each gadget is a light switch you can reach from anywhere. The app or speaker is the remote control, and the hub is the universal remote that knows how to talk to all of them.

Will it work with my other stuff?

Look for the Matter logo. Matter is a shared standard supported by Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung and others, so a Matter device should work with any of their apps and speakers. Otherwise, check the box for “works with” your system.

What it means for you

Start with one or two things that solve a real annoyance, like a lamp on a timer while you’re away. Every connected gadget is also a small computer on your network, so a few safety habits matter.

Quick tips

  • Buy from well-known brands that promise security updates.
  • Change any default password and turn on two-step verification for the app account.
  • Consider putting gadgets on a guest Wi-Fi network.
  • Use the microphone mute button on smart speakers when you want privacy, and review voice-recording settings in the app.
  • Keep the app and device updated.
