Matter is a shared language for smart home gadgets. A plug, bulb or lock with the Matter logo can be set up in Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa or Samsung SmartThings, instead of only one brand’s app. Thread is a low-power wireless network some Matter gadgets use.
Why it exists
For years, buying a smart plug meant checking if it worked with your assistant, and setting it up in yet another app. The big companies agreed on Matter (run by the Connectivity Standards Alliance) so devices work across systems, often controlled locally over your home network.
What is Thread?
Thread is a wireless network made for small battery gadgets like sensors and locks. Thread devices relay signals for each other, so coverage gets better as you add more. Thread devices need a Thread border router, which is built into many recent smart speakers, displays and streaming boxes (for example some Apple TV, HomePod, Google Nest and Echo models).
Before you buy
- Look for the Matter logo on the box.
- Check whether it uses Wi-Fi or Thread. Thread needs a border router at home.
- Keep the box or the setup QR code sticker; you scan it to add the device.
- Check which features work through Matter; some extras may still need the maker’s app.
Sharing between apps
One Matter device can be added to more than one system (for example Apple Home and Alexa) so everyone in the family can use their favorite. Look for “Multi-admin” or “share with other apps” in the device settings.
Quick tips
- Prefer Matter-certified devices for new purchases.
- Keep setup codes in a safe place (a photo in a private album works).
- Start small: one plug or bulb, then expand.
