A prompt is simply what you type (or say) to an AI tool. Good prompts have four parts: the task (what you want), context (who it’s for and why), details (anything it must include or avoid) and the format (a list, a short email, a table). Then keep going with follow-ups.

1. What is a prompt?
A prompt is your question or request. AI tools can't read your mind: the more clearly you say what you want, the better the answer. You don't need special words; plain English works best.
2. The four parts of a good prompt
- Task: what you want it to do. “Write”, “explain”, “plan”, “compare”, “summarize”.
- Context: who it's for and why. “For my grandson's 10th birthday”, “I'm a beginner”.
- Details: must-haves and must-avoids. “Under $50”, “no nuts”, “keep it friendly”.
- Format: how the answer should look. “5 bullet points”, “a short email”, “a table”.
3. Before and after
🙁 Before “Write a birthday message.”
😊 After “Write a warm, funny birthday message for my sister Ann, who's turning 60 and loves gardening. Keep it under 50 words.”
Adds context (who, age, interests) and format (length).
🙁 Before “Plan a trip.”
😊 After “Plan a relaxed 3-day trip to San Diego for two retirees who don't like long walks. Give a simple day-by-day list with one main activity per day.”
Adds context, a detail to avoid, and a format.
🙁 Before “Explain the cloud.”
😊 After “Explain what “the cloud” means in plain English for someone who has never used it, in 3 short bullet points, with one everyday example.”
Adds the audience and the format.
4. Ask follow-ups
The first answer is a starting point. Just reply in the same chat:
- “Make it shorter.” / “Make it more formal.”
- “Give me 3 other options.”
- “Explain step 2 more simply.”
- “What are you unsure about? What should I double-check?”
Start a new chat when you switch topics, so old details don't get mixed in.
5. Try it the easy way
Our free Prompt Creator asks you a few simple questions and writes a clear prompt you can copy into ChatGPT, Copilot or Gemini. Nothing you type leaves your device.
