“Storage full”? Your photo options, explained

Why your phone or cloud says it’s full, what’s actually using the space, and how to fix it without losing pictures.

The short version

There are two different “full” messages. Phone storage full means the phone itself is out of room. iCloud or Google storage full means your online backup space is used up, so new photos stop backing up. Free accounts include 5 GB on iCloud and 15 GB on Google, shared with email and files.

📅 Checked as of October 2026. Free amounts are from Apple and Google’s help pages; paid plan prices vary by country, so we don’t list them. Apps and rules change, so check the sources below if something looks different.

Which one is full?

  • Phone: iPhone Settings › General › iPhone Storage. Android: Settings › Storage.
  • iCloud: Settings › [your name] › iCloud. The 5 GB free covers device backups, photos, iCloud Drive and mail.
  • Google: the 15 GB free is shared by Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. Check at one.google.com/storage.
Think of it like this: your phone is a closet, the cloud is a rented storage unit. A full closet and a full storage unit need different fixes.

Fixes for a full phone

  • Turn on Optimize iPhone Storage (iCloud Photos) or use Google Photos’ Free up space. Full-size originals stay in the cloud, the phone keeps smaller copies. Only do this once backup is complete.
  • Delete videos you don’t need. A few minutes of video can use as much space as hundreds of photos.
  • Empty Recently Deleted (it keeps photos about 30 days).
  • Remove apps you never use. See free up phone storage.

Fixes for full cloud storage

  • Delete big old email attachments and old device backups you don’t need.
  • Copy photos to a computer and an external drive, then delete them from the cloud. See getting photos onto a computer.
  • Or pay for more space. Check the current plans in your settings; a family plan can be shared.
⚠️ Deleting a photo from a synced phone usually deletes it from the cloud too. Make sure you have another copy first.

Quick tips

  • Find out which storage is actually full before you delete anything.
  • Delete long videos first; they take the most space.
  • Keep at least one copy of your photos off the cloud too. See the 3-2-1 backup rule.
